Supply Ships: |
|
|
|
|
|
The
Royal Dutch Navy started building her first specifically built Supply
Ship, Tankboot 1, on December 14th, 1939. When the Second World War
started in the Netherlands on May 10th, 1940, the ship was still in its
building phase. After the German invasion, the ship was taken in German
service as the Kärten. In this period the Dutch Navy themselves hired
or requisitioned several merchand ships to use them as supply ships.
Mostly these ships were not militarized and sailed with under their
civil name and with their civil crew. Sometimes the ships were equipped
with weapons for self-defence, mostly not. It was not before the Second
World War ended, the Dutch Navy started using supply ships that were
specifically designed for that purpose.
