The Kaidai Type KDIIIa-class submarines was a similar class of submarines to the KDI and KDII types, but wit a strenthened hull. The type was built under the 1923-1928 building program.
The class consisted of four ships. Between March and July 1942 all ships in the class were taken from active duty and used as training submarines.
In april 1945 the I-158 was modernized and developed to be able to carry two Kaiten miniature submarines.
