The
Kaidai Type KDIIIa-class submarines was a similar class of submarines
to the KDI and KDII types, but wit a strenthened hull. The type was
built under the 1923-1928 building program.
The class consisted of four ships. Between March and July 1942 all
ships in the class were taken from active duty and used as training
submarines.
In april 1945 the I-158 was modernized and developed to be able to
carry two Kaiten miniature submarines.
