Infanterie-Regiment 116



History:
The Infanterie-Regiment 116 was formed on October 6th, 1936 within the Wehrkreis IX with the Stab in Giessen. The I. Bataillon was formed in Giessen with the use of parts from the Infanterie-Regiment 15, Infanterie-Regiment 57 and Infanterie-Regiment 103. Also in Giessen, the II. Bataillon was formed from parts of the Infanterie-Regiment 16, Infanterie-Regiment 36, Infanterie-Regiment 46 and Infanterie-Regiment 47. Parts of the Infanterie-Regiment 39, Infanterie-Regiment 49, Infanterie-Regiment 51 and Infanterie-Regiment 54, were used to form the III. Bataillon in Fulda. Also in Giessen, the Ergänzungs-Bataillon vom Infanterie-Regiment 116 was formed by renaming the Ergänzungs-Bataillon vom Infanterie-Regiment 53.
After forming the regiment, it was placed under command of the 9. Infanterie-Division.
On October 12th, 1937, the III. Bataillon was transferred to the Infanterie-Regiment 87 as its III. Bataillon. With the use of parts of the Infanterie-Regiment 87 and parts of the own Regiment, early November 1938 a new III. Bataillon was formed in Wetzlar within the Wehrkreis IX.
On September 24th, 1940 the III. Bataillon again was transferred to another regiment, this time the Infanterie-Regiment 428. Again an new III. Bataillon was formed.
In 1941, the Kolonne was transferred to the 9. Infanterie-Division as the 10. Kolonne of the Infanterie-Divisions-Kolonne 9.
The complete regiment was changed to Grenadier-Regiment 116 on October 15th, 1942.

For the reserve and addition of personnel, the Infanterie-Ersatz-Bataillon 116 was used.
