Mears, John (245659)

|
May 18th, 1943; Lieutenant "At
the Battle of Medenine 6th Mar 1943 this Officer Commanded a Tp of
Heavy Tanks. He was ordered into a battle line poss. about 14.15 hrs to
break up a concentration of eleven enemy tanks. He skilfully manoeuvred
his Tp into a position behind the commanding ridge from which he
brought the fire from his Troop to bear in an exceptionally short time.
The speed and accuracy of the shooting was such that in the initial
shoot five enemy tanks were knocked out in 12 mins. Lieut Mears then
ordered one tank to engage two enemy MET, and directed the fire so that
they were both knocked out. At a subsequent phase when his own tank had
run out of A.P ammunition , Lieut Mears engaged an enemy tank with
delayed action H.E and by manoeuvring for posn scored three direct
hits, so damaging the enemy tank that it was put out of action.
Throughout he day Lieut Mears conduct and leadership gave great
inspiration to those under his command. He displayed throughout
exceptional tactical skill and with the men under his command produced
outstanding results from quick accurate gunnery."
